The study intends to support the state of Kerala in its transition towards a low-carbon economy by developing biomethane production from waste streams, as well as other biomass sources, simultaneously solving issues associated with biodegradable waste treatment while developing local production of non-fossil fuel alternatives.
The main objectives consist of the following:
a) Raise awareness on biogas generation from waste streams among local (Kerala) stakeholders, including private sector.
b) Evaluate feedstock availability across the various sources within Kerala (urban, agricultural, and industrial), including biogas potential and mobilization strategy.
c) Determine market for large-scale biogas across the main end-use sectors including transport, heating and cooking, specifically identifying drivers and roadblocks along the value chain.
d) Prepare Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) plan, and evaluation of climate co-benefits depending on end-use scenarios.
